ALA Maryland Girls StateThanks to a $500 sub grant from the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation, ALA Maryland Unit 296 was able to send three of its Junior members to the ALA Maryland Girls State program. The grant paid for their tuition.

After attending the ALA National Convention in Reno, Nev., in 2017, the unit became determined to participate more extensively in the ALA Girls State initiative.

The grant originated from the John and Patricia Bowell Foundation before passing through the ALA Foundation.

Unit 296 is part of a small American Legion post in Queenstown, Md., in a rural part of the state.
Some praises from the girls who attended ALA Girls State as part of the grant:

  • “Thank you, ALA Unit 296. This was the best week of my life.”
  • “I was so shy, but now I have a voice.”
  • “Thank you, ALA. You have helped me make decisions about my life.”
